The
Department of Microelectronics and Information Technology (IMIT) is seeking a
licentiate student for a project in the area security in policy-based network
management.
The project
concerns the use of rules to determine network traffic parameters. Such a
management system requires a security infrastructure which can ensure, for
instance, that only those agents that are properly authorized are capable of
introducing policy objects, that policies are not tampered with by malicious
third parties, that policy information is only revealed to those agents which
have authority to view, and that changes and updates are suitably audited. In
centralized systems it is quite well understood how to build such trust
management systems. The objective of the present project is to examine the case of large networks for which
centralized, static control is not feasible. In this situation more dynamic
solutions must be found, which allow management-level authority to propagate
dynamically through the network while preserving desired properties concerning
integrity, privacy, and performance. The project will examine the requirements of such a more distributed trust
management framework, which changes will be required to existing frameworks,
and will include formal modeling and analysis as important components.
The
position is situated at the Laboratory for Electronic and Computer Systems at
IMIT and will involve close collaboration with the Formal Design Techniques Lab
at SICS, Swedish Institute of Computer Science (see http://www.sics.se/fdt).
The
successful applicant will be engaged initially towards the degree of lic. techn.
Continuation towards the degree of Ph.D. is under normal circumstances
expected. The nominal time of study for the degree of lic. techn. is 2
years.
