The
telecommunication company XPhone have increased the
number of subscribers to their cellular phone network lately and are expecting
even more new customers. For this reason they are now trying to decide whether
or not they have to modify or expand their network covering a highway
connecting two major cities. Some measurements have been made of the traffic in
the network on the highway. Your task is to model and simulate the system to
determine if the system meets the quality of service requirements, and if so,
how much more traffic the network can handle before it is necessary to expand
it.
Use the
following assumptions:
The highway is
40 km long.
All cells are of
equal size with 2 km diameter.
There are 10
channels available in each cell.
Fixed Channel
Allocation (FCA) scheme is used
Users will
accept no more than:
2% blocked
calls.
1% dropped
calls.
You can

on call initiation times, call
durations, and car speeds at

The company has been receiving complaints
about interrupted calls but have had problems collecting measurement data to
confirm this. According to your simulation results could there be such a
problem?
If you find that there is such a problem
could you determine how this problem could be resolved, for instance by using a
handover channel reservation scheme. How many channels should be reserved for
handover? Could the system handle more
traffic with the channel reservation scheme?
In that case how much more?
Important: Consider the boundary problem Since the system is finite the boundary cells will be
different from the cells in the center and thus
affect the overall statistics of the system. Try to devise a way to avoid this
boundary problem, i.e. try to modify your model to avoid the boundary problem.
NOTE
·
A
handover channel reservation scheme means that some of the channels are reserved
for handovers. This should reduce the dropping probability, but increases the
blocking probability.
