1. Introduction to KTH and Kista science park

Royal Institute of Technology (Kungl Tekniska Högskolan, KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, is a world class technical university with the largest research activity base in the Nordic area. The Information Technology activities are located at our IT University Campus in Kista Science Park in the northern part of Stockholm. Kista Science Park consists of a dynamic fabric of universities with over 3100 students in IT, research institutes, and over 600 companies with 27 000 employees shaping the global future of the wireless communication. All the major companies in wireless area have their R&D Centers in Kista. This unique combination and the sheer size of the activities ranks the Kista Science Park among the top 5 Science park in the world and number one, according to many professional and business magazines, in the wireless domain. The dynamics and excitement here in Kista is itself a life-time experience. Despite the fact that Stockholm is a small city (around 1.8 million people including suburbs), as a capital of Sweden, it provides a full range of activities and attractions from culture to sports. Its location close to water has made a special impact to Stockholm area; here you find lakes, rivers, sea and one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world; and of course, the city.

2. Important information from the administration of the IT-university, KTH

The administration of the IT-University posts information on the ITU-Informationsforum. You find there information about diploma, course enrolement and other information that is valid for all master programs. Also, the ITU-Informationsforum contains other discussiongroups, which can be very useful for master students. You have to have a KTH.SE identity to enter this forum.

There is a new web page with all administrative information from the ITU-University without identity requirement. You can also find there the information about diploma, course enrolement and other information that is valid for all master programs.

3. Computers and Laptops

Starting from study year 2007/2008 KTH does not provide anymore computers to its students for the purpose of labs, home assignments or studying. Computers are seen as any other study material such as books. Students are required to have their own PC or laptop to be able to complete labs, assignments and for their studies in general.

KTH offers students to buy a computer at a reduced price. More information about this program is available here.

For the academic year 2006/2007 KTH still provides a limited number of computers for labs. Unfortunately, these are old models used only during the phase out period. Thus, students are encouraged to use their own PCs or laptops for all labs and home assignments.

4. Course selection

The SOC-program has an elective part. You will find a description of the courses on the Official Study Handbook. We recommend that you select courses from each category. For further information please go to the page "Course election and enrollment". The deadline is November 15 for the spring 2007.

Note that you also need to select your master thesis. There are two forms to fill in here and here.

In case of questions to the election process please contact the Director of Studies.

5. Student work permission in Sweden

Since 10th december 2002, the swedish immigration board Migrationsverket allows students from outside the EU/EEA who already hold a residence permit, to take work without a special work-permission. This does not affect the requirement that you need to be able to finance yourself (i.e. apart from possible work opportunities), when you apply for a residence permitt in Sweden. Please refer to the following document residence_permitt_sw.pdf (in swedish) and residence_permitt_eng.pdf (in english) and consult the web pages of Migrationsverket for further details.

6. Practical advisement to new master students

We would like to give you some practical advice concerning the Master Program and your anticipated travel to Sweden.

  • Please confirm your participation in the Master Program as soon as possible if you want us to hold a place for you. Use our fax number or e-mail address.
  • The procedure of obtaining a Visa can be lengthy, especially during the months of June, July and August. Therefore, you should as soon as possible apply for a student residence permit at the Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country. Please, bring your letter of acceptance to the embassy/consulate. Note: you have to verify your financial capability to the Swedish embassy/consulate. The Swedish Immigration board recommends an amount of SEK 7000/month on an individual basis.
  • For those who have not already done so in their applications, please also send the material stating your financial capability to us.
  • The accommodation situation for students is hard in Stockholm. However, we can assist you in finding accomodation. Please, inform us immediately whether or not you need assistance in finding accommodation so that we can avoid unnecessary costs and delays. If you should prefer any other type of accommodation, you must arrange that yourself. See also the additional information about accommodation below.

There will be an introduction meeting in the first week of the new academic year where you will get important informations regarding entrance cards, computer accounts etc. You can also meet the headmaster as well as other people from our laboratory. Please bring your passport for the registration.

Note that Kista, where the SoC education will take place, is a suburb to Stockholm and is located approximately 10 km north of Stockholm center. The KTH main campus, on the other hand, is located in the north-east part of Stockholm city. See also the information "To get to us". The public transportation is generally good in Stockholm. For more information, see www.sl.se. Find a map of the local transport system HERE.

7. Travel insurance:

It is advised that you have a traveler's insurance from your home country which covers your journey to Sweden and at least the first month here. Make sure that this first insurance also can be prolonged. We hope to be able to help all students, who are not covered by other insurances, with a health care insurance. Such an insurance costs approximately SEK 1500 per year and the whole of this cost must be covered by the student. Note that such an insurance does not cover invalidity, mortality, or personal belongings, but only takes the co st for medical treatment.

8. Financial issues

KTH does not levy any tuition fee. However, there is a compulsory fee to the Student Union of approximately SEK 400 per year. See www.ths.kth.se.

10. Climate in Sweden

The Swedish year is divided into four distinct seasons: June - August is summer and the weather is mostly warm and nice. No special clothes are needed. September-October is autumn and the weather is getting colder and you will need thicker clothes. From November-April we have our winter period when the temperature usually stays around zero or, in December to March about -5 to -10 (degrees Celsius). Really thick clothes and shoes are needed and can be bought here in Sweden. In the end of April - May we have spring and the weather is getting warmer again.
