Application

This Master degree program for internationally oriented students prepares students to meet the global career challenges in integrating wireless and wired communication electronics. The program provides the knowledge and skills needed for such integration work and bridges the computer engineering and microelectronics curriculums.

The program enhances capabilities to work in global project teams, provides solid foundation for life-long learning and personal development based on the pedagogic model used. Many of the courses are based on the world class research at Royal Institute of Technology (Kungliga Tekniska Hogskolan, KTH).

Eligibility

Applicants should have completed their university or polytechnic institute level education in mathematics, electronics and programming as indicated below. Professional experience acquired in related fields will be considered a merit. Our formal requirements are:

  • Awarded B. Sc. or B. Eng. degree from a university or polytechnic institute corresponding to at least 3-year full-time academic study program (equal to 180 ECTS credits); or equivalent of 3 year studies at university level towards master's level degree, corresponding to at least 180 credit units of course work. Note, that KTH requires 4-5 years or studies from students from certain countries. See the `KTH Minimum Admission Requirements' table for details.
  • In both cases above, the studies must have included minimum six months (equal to 20 credits) of courses in any combination from the following subjects: Microelectronics, Electronics, Computer science or engineering, or Communication engineering.
  • A good knowledge of written and spoken English. Applicants must provide proof of their proficiency in English. KTH accepts a TOEFL test score of a minimum of 550 (213 in the computer-based test, 79 in the internetbased test) or an IELTS score of at least 6.0, no band lower than 5.0 (both general and academic accepted). More information on www.toefl.org and www.ielts.org. The TOEFL code for KTH is 7966. English proficiency tests are waived for applicants with English as language of instruction (minimum 3 years of full-time higher education studies). Please enclose a certificate from your university with your application.
For EU citizens or applicants from KTH:s partner universities, a certificate from the University language department or the Head of department stating the student's good knowledge of English will be enough. Please note, however, that knowledge of English may be taken into account in the selection process for some programmes, ie a good Toefl/IELTS result may be of added value.
  • Students who have completed their Master's degree in closely related areas of science or engineering are also encouraged to apply.
Note: In the Swedish academic system 1 week of full-time study equals 1.5 ECTS credits.

Application process

Application deadline for EU students (EU/EEA citizens including Sweden) is April 15th every year, for the program starting in September of the same year. Application deadline is January 15th for citizens from all other countries.

Scholarships, Insurance and Accommodation

While students do not incur any tuition fees at KTH (except for a small fee covering membership in the Student Union), they need to cover all living expenses in Sweden on their own, as well as the costs of all travel between their respective home countries and Sweden. Typical living expenses are about 7000 SEK per month. A limited number of scholarships might become available by the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and higher Education, the Swedish Institute (SI), or the Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency (SIDA). These scholarships are usually sufficient to cover living and studying expenses in Stockholm. Unless explicitly mentioned otherwise, scholarships do not cover travel expenses between the student's home countries and Sweden.

Scholarships by the Swedish Institute can include medical insurance in Sweden. All other scholarships do not include any type of medical insurance. However, all students admitted are required to have a health and accident insurance valid in Sweden, as the costs of medical and dental treatment for citizens from outside the European Union are very expensive. Special agreements concerning medical insurance issues exist between Sweden and other countries within the European Union. Students admitted from these countries need to request from the relevant organizations in their home countries the necessary documentation, which provides them with access to medical treatment in Sweden in accordance with the existing intra-European agreements. The Program has no possibility to assume any financial responsibility for any type of health or accident expenses.

Upon request, students admitted to the program will be assisted in finding affordable student-type accommodation in facilities administered through Royal Institute of Technology. The current cost of this type of accommodation is about SEK 3600/month. Accommodation is provided either in individual rooms with en-suite bathrooms, or in apartments shared by two students. Due to practical reasons, accommodation is made available on a first-come first-served basis at the discretion of the program administration. This type of housing is made available for a minimum of three months. The program can unfortunately not administer alternative types of accommodation. If you wish to find an place on your own, you are advised to start searching early in advance, as it is difficult to find accommodations in the Stockholm.

Applicants interested in receiving financial support from the Swedish Institute should request scholarship application forms directly from www.si.se.

Applicants interested in obtaining financial support from the Swedish Foundation for international Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT), or the Swedish international Development and Cooperation agency (SIDA) should find more information from www.sida.se.

Students from Nordic countries are eligible to enlarged study support benefits from their home countries. Contact the responsible university office or government agency for receiving more information. Also Nordisk Forskarakademien can provide financial support.

Students from European Union countries are eligible both for the national support packages as well as support via Socrates/Erasmus and other Commission financed programs. Contact your Socrates office in your university for more information (http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/index_en.html).

From year 2005, there are a few CSC scholarship available for excellent Chinese Applicants. Student can apply for a CSC scholarship via CSC (Chinese Scholarship Council) .

Since 10th December 2002, the swedish immigration board Migrationsverket allows students from outside the EU/EEA who already hold a residence permit, to take work without a special work permission. This does not affect the requirement that you still need to be able to finance yourself (i.e. apart from possible work opportunities), when you apply for a residence permit in Sweden. Please refer to the following document (in Swedish, in English) and consult the web pages of Migrationsverket for further details.

We have a very limited number of local scholarships available based on academic excellence. The number and amount of scholarship can vary every year. A typical scholarship would be possible of up to 5000 SEK per month, for the 9 month course period (i.e. not during the thesis period). If you belong to the top 5% of your class, apply for this local scholarship in your application papers. We can, however, not give any guarantees for neither number, nor amount of scholarships provided each year.
